Decision Making A Rational Approach - 1572 Words

To demonstrate effective judgment and decision making a rational approach must be taken in order to reach an optimal decision. I am diagnosed with a high functioning form of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder. This condition drives me to act exceptionally irrational in my judgments and decisions. I strive each day to improve my skills and decrease the impact of my irrational fears. With a major of management, my future career undoubtedly be filled with tough decisions and judgment calls that require a calm, sound and rational mind. This paper will cover the knowledge acquired over the past sixteen weeks on judgment and decision-making. Frequently occurring events are more easily remembered, thus deemed highly probable. These events will carry much more weight it has occurred in recent times. The ease of retrievability bias states that frequency of occurrences is generally overestimated because of the way the mind structures itself and the search strategies humans use. We structure the world around us according to the way we search for information within our own minds. I am extremely guilty of constantly utilizing the availability heuristic inappropriately to streamline my decision-making process. When facing decisions, I immediately rack my brain to estimate probability from the limited knowledge I possess. I tend to take a much longer time to decide which alternative to choose in the decision-making process. I dismiss looking for outside information because of a belief that it will take me a much longer time. In theory this is ridiculous since I am well aware that I am an irrational person especially in the area of judgment and decision making. While using this heuristic can lead to an optimal decision. Availability of information is affected by vivid, emotional responses. The in formation that is recalled is most likely always skewed as I encounter many situations that invoke strong emotional responses.
